CHAPTER SEVEN: Monday Morning: Giving Notice

There was a thirty second pause, I heard papers shuffling in the background. I said,"Hello? Barbera?" Barbera replied,"Hello? Roscoe? Are you still there?" "Yes. What happened." "Oh. I just took the schedule down from the bulletin board behind the desk. Did you think you lost me?" "Yes. I wasn't sure." Barbera continued, "Okay. What night's were crazy?" "Both." "Both?" Barbera echoed,"Do you mean Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday?" "Well? I guess all three were crazy." "All three?" she sounded surprized. "Yes," I confirmed. "All three nights were crazy."

Barbera exclaimed,"Okay. What happened?" "Okay. Friday night, at Orientation, Sam dressed up as a new hire and pretended to be there for Orientation. Who is he anyway?" "Don't worry about him," Barbera assured me,"He's supposed to do that. What else happened?" "At Orientation, I had to sign that big long list of rules, and I couldn't get a copy of the rules so I could study them. Then, when we went upstairs for the grill demonstration, the people working broke almost every rule on the list. According to your list of rules, everyone working Friday evening should be fired for something." "Yeah, but if I fired everyone, we wouldn't have anyone working here, would we?"

My answer was,"Yeah. But you could fire the troublemakers so the working environment is healthy." I tried to impress Barbera with my Management potential. She said,"We follow the rules the best we can. You'll have to do what you can with those rules. What else?" I told her,"The grill demonstration went too fast, I didn't learn anything." "Oh," she responded,"That wasn't supposed to be a training session, that was just an Orientation so we could meet each other." I told her,"We sure did that." She asked,"What else happened?" "Nothing else Friday night, except for the free food for the GrillGuys who worked off the clock." She responded,"Oh? What about Saturday night?"
