CHAPTER SEVEN: Monday Morning: Giving Notice

PAGE 78

Barbera asked me,"What do you mean?" "Well," I said,"If you can't keep people for more than a weekend, you must spend all your spare time hiring people and filling out paper work for the ones who quit." "Well? It might seem that way." Barbera became defensive,"But it is the Midnight Shift, those aren't the best working conditions." "That's true," I agreed to be nice,"There's no excuse for all the insanity though." "What do you mean, insanity."

Barbera thought I was quitting because the late night hours were too much for me to handle. She didn't seem to know about all the violence and other crazy stuff going on in the store late at night. I told her about my experience over the weekend. "You, know, like the crew eating free food when they work off the clock? And the food fights that start without warning? They say there was something 'funny' in the soda system, they wouldn't let me drink the soda." "Oh. Are they doing that again?" I wasn't sure which 'that' she was referring to. I assumed the soda system 'that' was the 'that' she was talking about. 'That' 'that' was the most severe 'that' that happened over the weekend. It seemed they were serving 'funny soda' without people knowing they were being served tainted soda. And Barbera must have known about the insanity because she used the term 'again'. "Are they doing that again?"

I agreed, even though I wasn't 100% sure which 'that again' Barbera was referring to. She asked me,"Who was working when there was something in the soda." "Mel was the Manager, and Jenni and Betty were Cashiers when they wouldn't let me drink the soda. But if it's happened before, you should also check who was working the last time it happened. You should compare schedules so you can identify who was behind it."
