McNormal's: Another Last Food Restaurant by: Roscoe Smith

CHAPTER FIVE: After Midnight: Give Me Strength

PAGE 46

No big deal, my job was to do dishes, everyone knows how to do dishes. While I walked to the sink area, I noticed the GrillGuys were still sitting in the side dining area. Rule thirty something stated that noone was allowed to stay in the store for more than ten minutes after their shift ended. Apparently, the rules didn't apply to the GrillGuys. My guess was that the GrillGuys were waiting for the HighSchooler Cashiers to get off work. The Cashiers were downstairs changing from their McNormal's uniforms.

In the sink area I found the dish soap under the sink. I turned on the water and sprinkled a little soap into the wash sink. McNormal's is no different than Summer Camp or any other restaurant, they use the 'three sink method' of doing dishes. The first sink is the 'wash sink' the middle sink is the 'rinse sink' and the third sink is the 'sanitize sink'. Then the cleaned, sanitized dishes are stacked so they can drain and 'air dry'. At McNormal's the instructions for preparing the sinks were posted on the wall above the sinks.

The HighSchooler Cashiers were making noise coming up the stairs from the changing room. One girl was telling the other girl,"I hope John and Dave are waiting for us. Do you think they are?" The HighSchoolers seemed different after they punched out their time cards. They seemed to undergo a personality change. The two girls came up the stairs and stopped at the sink area. The sinks were still filling with water, the girls stood and watched the last sink fill. I thought,"This is strange, what the heck."

I sunk my left arm into the soapy water and grabbed a dirty pan to wash. One of the girls asked me, "Did you really go to college?" I was polite, no big deal,"Yes, but I didn't finish." The girl continued, "My brother goes to State College." I was polite,"That's nice." I didn't want them to bother me, I was just being polite. The girl kept asking questions, the other girl leaned on the sink with her elbow, she rested her chin on her hand and watched. I looked at her and back at the girl asking the questions, and I kept doing dishes.
