McNormal's: Another Last Food Restaurant by: Roscoe Smith

CHAPTER NINE: FAST FOOD equals LAST FOOD

PAGE 94

As the sinks filled with hot water, I looked around the back of the store for some indication why this place was so crazy. I thought, "Maybe it's the drugs that were allegedly in the soda system." I thought about what James told me,"They're going to make it impossible for you to get a job anywhere." I thought,"Ha! All this harassment for the privledge of cooking burgers on a midnight shift for minimum wage?" I tried to understand how 'they' get away with so much illegal activity without legal recourse.

The sinks filled with water in about five minutes. I started to daydream my way into the mundane task of doing dishes. Looking around the back of the store, I noticed a FALLOUT SHELTER sign at the top of the basement stairs. I thought,"Oh. How convenient, a FALLOUT SHELTER in the basement of a McNormal's Family Restaurant. While we're hiding from the atom bombs, we can eat hamburgers and French fries.
The LAST FOOD we ever eat will be FAST FOOD.
"

What a vivid daydream. People would be on the roads trying to escape from the atom bombs but they couldn't run because there would be too many people trying to run. Just like in the movie accounts of the end of the world. The only thing left of society would be long streams of cars on all the highways.

Many people would be coming to McNormal's Family Restaurant because we have a FALLOUT SHELTER in our basement.
"Free food while we wait out the war,"
that's what everyone would think.

But this FAST FOOD would be LAST FOOD. Where could people hide from the atomic bombs? When an atom bomb explodes, people can't just hide behind a door. An atomic explosion is like air, atomic particles pass through doors and walls and even buildings. In fact, trying to hide from an atomic chain reaction would be a waste of time. Hiding in the basement of a fast food restaurant from an atomic war is like hiding in a trash can in the path of a tidal wave. Trying to run from an atomic war is like trying to run from sunrise. Think about it for a minute. Can you run from sunrise? For how long do you think you can run from the sunrise? FOR EVER? As the boxer said about fighting in a small boxing ring,"You can run, but you can't hide." And it's the same way with atomic explosions.
