McNormal's: Another Last Food Restaurant by: Roscoe Smith

CHAPTER THREE: Orientation: THE GAME Begins

PAGE 10

So there I was, sitting in a McNormal's Family Restaurant, trying to get a new career started. I brought all the dreams to my new career that motivate people to try something new. Money, power, respect. A career with a future, that's what they said. BANG ! Right from the start, this guy who called himself 'Sam' tried to deceive me. I just wanted to work and learn grill skills and how to run a restaurant. As Sam smoked his cigarette, the smoke drifted across the table and made my eyes burn.

At 7:05, after ten minutes of trying to make small talk, Sam crunched the lighted end of his cigarette in the ash tray. "Well?" he said. "Let's get this show on the road." Of course, I agreed,"Let's go." This presented more proof that Sam was more familiar with the store than a new hire would be. He lead toward the Office door and I followed. Sam entered the Office door and paused at a desk inside the door. Sam said to the woman sitting on the desk,"Hi, Judy. Where's Bob?" That was the only introduction I received. The woman sitting on the desk frowned, turned her palms up and shrugged her shoulders. Sam continued walking into the back of the store. I smiled at Judy and shrugged my shoulders, the same signal she gave to Sam. I pointed at Sam and followed him into the back of the store.

Sam was clapping his hands and chanting,"Where's Bob? - Where's Bob? - Let's Go! - Where's Bob?" I stopped trying to follow Sam. I looked back at Judy, she was watching Sam and smiling. Sam was walking around clapping his hands and chanting,"Where's Bob? - Where's Bob?" I watched and waited for what was going to happen next. I decided to play dumb until I learned the rules of THE GAME.

Finally, a person came into the back of the store where Sam was standing. I assumed this was Bob, he was wearing a name tag with 'BOB' on it. Bob seemed like a HighSchooler, maybe about seventeen years old. Sam turned to face the HighSchooler, "Hey, here's Bob. It's about time!" I looked over at Judy, she was smiling at Sam and Bob. Bob gave Sam and me a cheery greeting,"Hi, I'm Bob. Let's start the tour." I said,"Hey." and looked at Sam for his reaction. Sam looked bored and uninterested.
